Former West Ham player Dean Ashton has expressed serious concerns regarding West Ham United`s Premier League future, anticipating a challenging season ahead for the club.
The Hammers recently underwent a managerial change, dismissing Graham Potter and appointing Nuno Espirito Santo, previously at Nottingham Forest, as his replacement.
Under Nuno`s guidance, West Ham managed to secure a point away at Everton. Leading up to their subsequent match against Arsenal on Saturday, his primary focus was on solidifying defensive organization and optimizing set-piece strategies.
Despite these concentrated efforts, West Ham struggled to challenge Arsenal effectively and ultimately suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.
Speaking on talkSPORT on October 4th, Ashton remarked that West Ham offered “absolutely nothing” offensively against Arsenal. He vividly recalled only “that one header from Fullkrug… in the first 30 seconds” as a notable attacking moment.
While many observers believe Nuno, building on his successful tenure at Nottingham Forest, should be capable of guiding West Ham up the league standings—with some viewing Potter as the primary issue—Ashton holds a more cautious perspective.
Ashton is less optimistic, emphasizing that Nuno is managing a squad that received inadequate reinforcement during the summer transfer window, a direct consequence of poor recruitment decisions.
He predicts a “massive slog” ahead for West Ham and underscores the critical need for key players like Jarrod Bowen to consistently perform at their absolute best.
Ashton unequivocally stated his concern for their Premier League status, attributing it to “poor recruitment in the summer,” which left the squad lacking depth and dynamism. He acknowledged the arrival of Magassa from Monaco, who “looked OK today,” but underscored that “it’s going to be a real slog.” He further added that “players like Bowen are going to have to produce week in, week out, to give them a chance, because I don’t think there is a lot there for them.”
Following the upcoming international break, Nuno will oversee his first home match in charge at the London Stadium against Brentford, which will then be followed by a potentially crucial away fixture against Leeds United.
