Hakan Calhanoglu Reflects on His Inter Career: From Chivu to New Roles and Fan Affection

In a recent interview with KAFA Sports, Hakan Calhanoglu looked back at key moments in his career, particularly his time at Inter. He spoke about his relationship with Cristian Chivu, who coached Inter's Primavera (youth team) before working with the first team. "Chivu was already a coach for Inter's Primavera, and sometimes we'd play against his team. When he started working with us, the squad accepted him very quickly. The fact that he played for Inter was definitely an advantage. He gives opportunities to everyone, even the younger players. With Inzaghi, the philosophy is different."

Calhanoglu admitted that his start at Inter wasn't easy: "It wasn't simple to establish myself initially. I had to prove my worth. Even Inter fans had doubts. I remember my first game: a goal and an assist, a beautiful goal. I was emotional; it was an important moment in my career. I think I overcame it well. Perhaps arriving on a free transfer helped me mentally." He then touched upon the theme of Turkish identity in Europe: "Sometimes, having a Turkish passport can be a disadvantage in Europe because our value isn't always recognized. But today, players like Kenan or Arda are receiving due recognition for their performances, which is very important. I believe I also contributed to this change. When I chose the Turkish national team, I thought it could be an example for other young players who grew up abroad. And indeed, it happened: many chose Turkey."

The midfielder also described his tactical evolution under Simone Inzaghi: "When I arrived at Inter, I played in a different position. With Inzaghi, I adapted to a deeper midfield role, as a deep-lying playmaker (regista). Initially, there was Brozović, then after his departure, the coach proposed that role to me. I accepted: I play a bit further from the goal, but I have more control over the game. I help both offensively and defensively, and I also enjoy making tackles. My style has changed."

Finally, Calhanoglu expressed his gratitude for the affection of the Nerazzurri fans: "Inter fans came up with a chant for me. The first time, I was surprised: I'm not Italian, but they gave me so much affection. It means I've done something good. They accepted me, and our relationship of respect and love has grown. In Italy, fans are very important, and I feel I am important to them too. Thankfully, the work I do is being rewarded."
